Photos From Brooklyn (behind the scenes)

These are a few photos I took from my camera phone, during my most recent trip to NYC.

I attended college in NYC and lived there while living in NYC;  but these are a collection of photos from my most recent appointments in Brooklyn.  I spent so much time in the city that I never really ventured outside the city, to explore Brooklyn.  More photo coming soon (promise).

“It’s not that I’m lazy, It’s that I just don’t care”

In his book DriveDaniel H. Pink discusses the motivation of different generations and the question of why people choose the careers/jobs they do. At a certain point most of us look back on our XX number of years on the planet and wonder “When am I going to make a difference in the world?

Boomers are reaching the age where they are looking back on a lifetime of accomplishment and asking this question. For those that feel this question still remains unanswered, how can they make that difference? Many are starting second careers based on what they hold important to themselves, not just what pays the most. Purpose becomes the motivating factor for these individuals.

This soul-searching does not limit itself to just Boomers, however. Their children, the Echo-Boomers or Generation Y, seem to have inherited the trait of purpose driving decisions. Salaries alone are no longer enough to attract top talent. Incentives like work/life balance, charitable giving and work environment all play a larger factor to this generation than they did with their parents and generations before that.

So I’d like to pose a couple of questions. Why did you choose the career you did? Was it money? Prestige? Good will? And what benefits are more important to you than the almighty dollar? Are you willing to get paid less in order to enjoy life more? What motivates you?

Growing Pains

I’m at that funny, weird, uncomfortable stage in my career right now. I’ve been designing long enough that I know where I’d like to be and the type of companies I’d like to work for/with. The problem is I’m a mid-level designer with a lot of potential but not a lot of experience. Probably some of the best work I’ve done is concept work; and I really don’t have much real-world experience to pull from.

It’s a really confusing time for me right now. I’m very ambitious, I really don’t want to get distracted from staying focused on my career; but there’s a lot of waiting I have to do these days (it sucks). I have being stagnant in the midst of mediocrity – it’s frustrating. Where I want to be and where I am right now is so far from where I’d like to be in the future. I just need a chance to do great, meaningful work. Or maybe I just need to figure out a way to make my own opportunities.

This is a song for the genius child.
Sing it softly, for the song is wild.
Sing it softly as ever you can -
Lest the song get out of hand.

Nobody loves a genius child.

Can you love an eagle,
Tame or wild?
Can you love an eagle,
Wild or tame?
Can you love a monster
Of frightening name?

Nobody loves a genius child.

Kill him - and let his soul run wild.

New Concept Work: Complex Magazine

Like so many others , I’ve been caught up in the wave of success that Drake and his OVO (october’s Very Own) team has experienced lately.  Not only am I a fan of Drake’s, honest flow, crazy beats and inspirational lyrics – I’m also a fan of the business he and his team are building. The OVO team makes their own beats, create  in-house graphic designs and marketing…the list goes on. Basically, this team control Drakes image, by designing album artwork, designing clothing, blogging. The OVO team understands they have a powerful brand in Drake, they’re making up the rules as they go doing so much on their own terms.

Anyway, one day I would love to work with entertainers, publishing houses, etc. to create unique work in a way that the average person sanding in line at Barnes & Nobles would notice – and have to at least take a glance at the work.

Here’s my attempt to create a cover for Complex Magazine. This is a fictitious cover I designed to commemorate one of my favorite albums and artist this year, Mr. Rager AKA Kid Cudi
