Creating Album Artwork

Working with a certain theme is really important when it comes to dealing with clients. No matter who you work for (family, friend, client) or what kind of theme do you get, it always needs a solid execution to look professional. Even when the concept seems simple.

For this project we came up with an “Occupation: Human” concept, as most of the songs tell story about people and their lives. I had many different visions of human feelings trying to hit the best fitting one. Most of those concepts didn’t work out – either I couldn’t find the right photo or it looked pretty bad when I tried to experiment.

Finally I came up with an “in between” conclusion, I found something that wasn’t a feeling, but pointed to being a human. And it was the incompletion of life. That even though everything can be great, we suddenly lack something. Like we miss a piece. A missing puzzle. Read more

Make Your Content Make a Difference

Content, content, content. It’s an obvious part of any interactive experience. In fact, you’ve probably heard content is king, or queen, or some sort of royalty. Yet, content is elusive. Often, you don’t realize your content isn’t cutting it until it’s too late. Does any of this sound familiar? Delayer projects, broken designs, uneven voice or low-performing landing pages.

These problems and more are documented extensively, so I won’t dwell on them. What Iwill dwell on is the solution. But, first, let’s discuss the false ones. Just because someone articulates a problem well does not mean someone knows the solution. That’s when we’re susceptible to a false solution. In my many years of experience, I’ve found these two fake solutions to be very common, very distracting — and very disappointing.

House of Ballons: Artwork Tracked

I love music and one of my dream projects is to create album artwork for one of my favorite musicians, bands, etc. One of my favorite albums right now is The Weekend’s House of Ballons. The album basically tells a story about a crazy weekend (almost like the movie Fear and Loathing). The story starts with a man and his date getting ready for a wild weekend. (more…)

Kanye Album Covers Explained

New York Magazine: George Condo Explains His Five Covers for Kanye West’s Twisted Fantasy

George Condo may not be a household name, but his work has been pushed to the forefront of pop-culture with the release on Kanye’s latest album. Most are familiar with the controversial cover of My Dark Twisted Fantasy, which has been banned by Target, and depicts a representation of Kanye positioned against a nude Phoenix. Condo describes this cover as “challenging” Kanye with imagery. Condo goes on to explain his meetings with Kanye as well as the thought process behind the 5 alternate cover. Excerpts from the piece can be read below.

Head with sword

“I really like that idea of a Shakespearian thing,” West told Condo about this painting of a severed head wearing a crown. The piece’s two contrasting styles — “cubism and classicism forged together in a single painting” — dovetail, Condo says, with West’s music, with its “layers of different styles happening simultaneously.” What did Kanye see in the picture that made him like it? “His tragedy was a kind of exile that Kanye imposed upon himself,” Condo says. “He was free from exile by having the cathartic moment in the image. He’s alive in the painting, you know what I mean? In a strange way it’s like, he opened his eyes.” (more…)
